Cultural Patronage
Help Make the Next Discovery Possible
Research has always needed patrons.
For centuries, patrons have made scholarship, books, art, exploration and cultural work possible. Independent research is no different.
Much of the work you encounter here is researched, developed and funded independently by me — from archival research and fieldwork to travel, historic-site visits, photography and documentation, digital heritage projects, publishing and public-history initiatives.
There is no institution quietly paying for this work behind the scenes.
Every archive visited, historic site documented, research journey undertaken and public resource created requires time and real financial investment. I also choose to make a substantial part of my work freely available because I believe history and cultural heritage should reach beyond those who can afford to pay for it.
If you have read one of my articles, downloaded a resource, watched a lecture or meditation, followed my fieldwork, used my research, or simply believe that serious independent scholarship deserves to continue, you can become part of making the next piece of work possible.
Patronage works collectively.
You do not need to fund an expedition or an entire research project yourself. Individual acts of patronage can collectively support archives, specialist materials, site visits, documentation, travel and fieldwork.
Your patronage does not simply reward work already completed. It helps make the next discovery possible.

What Cultural Patronage Makes Possible
Archives & Research
Books, specialist sources, archive and repository visits and access to the evidence behind the work.
Fieldwork & Documentation
Historic-site visits, photography, recording, equipment and the practical costs of documenting heritage where it survives.
Research Journeys
Travel and accommodation required to investigate landscapes, buildings, collections and historical connections in person.
Public History
Digital heritage projects, articles, educational resources and other material that I deliberately make freely accessible.
A Closer Connection to the Work
For Cultural Patrons
Cultural patronage is first and foremost support for independent research. In return, I want patrons to feel closer to the work they are helping make possible — not through a conventional package of rewards, but through occasional glimpses into the research as it develops.
Quarterly
Patron Research Letter
A considered letter sharing research developments, discoveries and work in progress.
From the Field
Selected Research Notes
Occasional notes, images or observations when there is something genuinely worthwhile to share.
Annual
Patron Research Briefing
An online briefing bringing patrons closer to the year’s research, fieldwork and what comes next.
These are not the price of patronage. They are my way of bringing you closer to the discoveries, places and questions your support allows me to pursue.
