About This Session
This initial professional consultation is the starting point for a bespoke Historic Property Profiling commission. It is not the completed history of the property. The session gives Helena time to understand the building or site, what you already know, the questions you want answered, the purpose of the research and the form in which you may ultimately want the story presented.
The consultation lasts up to two hours and can be conducted online worldwide via Zoom. It may be used by private owners, property professionals, heritage organisations, hotels, institutions and others responsible for a historic building or site.
After the consultation, where further work is appropriate, Helena can recommend a research pathway and provide a bespoke quotation. A commission might be a concise researched story of the property; a more detailed investigation combining archives, maps, genealogy, architectural and landscape evidence; or a substantial illustrated profile or booklet. Research depth, fieldwork, archival costs, design and final deliverables are therefore priced separately according to the project.
Where a project benefits from on-site work, Helena can also visit the property as a subsequent commissioned stage. This may include walking and reading the building and grounds, inspecting significant surviving features, making field observations and undertaking documentary photography. Travel, site work, photography and any resulting visual material are additional services and are incorporated into the bespoke project scope rather than the initial consultation.
For estate agencies and other property professionals working regularly with period, country or historic homes, Helena can develop an ongoing professional arrangement rather than treating every property as an isolated commission. Bespoke packages can combine historical and provenance research, site visits, documentary photography, concise property narratives and interpretive material suitable for premium property presentation and marketing. Where an ongoing package is agreed, the initial consultation can be incorporated into the overall commission and pricing structured around the relationship and volume of work.
Helena's approach begins with the property itself. Where circumstances allow, she prefers to visit before undertaking detailed historical research so that prior knowledge does not condition what she notices. Documentary research then follows, allowing the building, its material evidence and her initial observations or intuitive impressions to generate questions that can be tested against the historical record.
Helena's published research into Loftus Hall demonstrates the depth that property-based investigation can reach when architecture, family history, symbolism, documentary evidence and the biography of a place are brought together.
